Plenary Breakfast:
Enlarging the Public to Private Pipeline
8:45am – 9:45am
Good sailors navigate to turn storm systems to their advantage. In the current financial crisis, the pool that supports fundamental life science research in our universities is set for a large increase. Unless something changes, an unacceptably small fraction of this investment in universities will trickle out into improved products and services for society. We must ask ourselves if this trickle can be turned into a torrent by making our universities more socially responsive, by matching them more efficiently with the private sector, and by de-risking product developments by encouraging biology to become more of an engineering science.
