Sustainable Laboratory Design
9:45am – 11:00am

The current global warming situation as well as the rising cost of energy makes focusing attention on energy conservation and "Green Lab Design" an economic as well as a moral imperative. Laboratory facilities are major energy users and much has been done in recent years to define ways of minimizing laboratory energy consumption. This session will include Dale Sartor and Paul Mathew of Labs21 "Labs for the 21st Century", a leading organization funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency and US Department of Energy which promotes and assists in the design of energy efficient laboratories and Richard Yardley of Newmatic Engineering. Paul Mathew, of Labs21, will describe the Labs21 Environmental Performance Criteria (LEED for Labs) and Dale Sartor, of Labs21, will present the "5 Big Hits" for laboratory energy conservation. Richard Yardley will present on the energy savings benefits of laboratory recommissioning. The session is intended to be an overview of design issues to be considered in designing laboratories to be energy efficient and sustainable as well as how to maintain labs to be energy efficient after construction is complete.

Strategies for Facilities Management During M&A, Relocation, Project Shift, or Rightsizing
11:15am – 12:30pm

A diverse panel representing the acquirer (a large biotech/pharma), the acquired (a smaller biotech company) and the facilitator (a service provider that assists during M&A and other major transition periods) will focus on several case studies and examine the requirements, activities, and challenges faced by life science companies during a transition period. This panel will discuss available processes, systems, services and tools to successfully manage these activities. Attendees will be provided with real-world examples and experiences of various phases of the transition, as well as lessons learned. The primary focus of the presentation will be on companies which have gone through or are going through an M&A transitional period. Supply Chain Link for Resiliency of Operations
1:45pm – 3:00pm

Do you have sole source suppliers? Are they prepared for an interruption? What do you do if they are not? What if transportation mechanisms are interrupted? Can you get your product to the customer timely, through alternative means? Do you have proper mechanisms in place to failover to alternate manufacturing equipment/facilities in the event of an HVAC, system or equipment failure with limited to no human intervention? These types of questions – significant business continuity risks to your organization originating throughout your organization – will be explored in this session, focusing on solutions that work. A panel of industry experts will focus more than on ideas – it will explore realities that have been implemented in similar organizations.
