Global Financial Crisis: Profound Impact on Biotechnology Business Model
8:45am – 9:45am

Global Financial Crisis: Profound Impact on Biotechnology Business Model As global financial crisis profoundly strains the biotechnology business model, many realize that time for business as usual for the life sciences industry is over. Unlike prior funding droughts, this crisis is systemic, deep and protracted. It is placing biotech growth under unprecedented strain. To thrive in this environment, firms will need to bring the creativity that has long been the industry’s hallmark to establishing more durable models for funding innovation.

In his keynote address Scott Morrison will discuss the 2009 industry financials and historic industry performance over the past 20 years; offer an analysis of four sweeping, paradigm-shifting trends: a wave of generic drugs based on today’s top blockbusters, the expansion of personalized medicine, fundamental healthcare reform in the United States, and the continued globalization of the industry.

The following fundamental questions will be examined: How will the life sciences field look after financial crisis is over? What will companies have to do to survive? What types of life sciences companies will survive? How will future life sciences companies and inventions be financed? What are some examples of more sustainable ways of funding drug development that we might see in the future? What are the implications for the life sciences facilities and operations? What are the implications for manufacturing?

Keynote Speaker:

Scott Morrison
National Leader, Life Sciences, Ernst & Young LLP

A Perfect Storm: Altering the Landscape for Biotechnology Innovation
12:45pm - 3:00pm

A perfect storm of economic and political changes is altering the landscape for life sciences innovation in dramatic ways. As companies cope with a challenging credit and funding environment, Congress and the Obama Administration are challenging conventional approaches to health care reform, patent reform, and follow-on biologics.

During our first keynote presentation, BIO President & CEO Jim Greenwood will discuss how these policy decisions will either encourage or undermine future life sciences innovation.

During our second keynote presentation, respected life sciences leader iPierian, Inc. CEO John P. Walker will discuss how life sciences companies are weathering the storm and the future outlook from a life sciences practitioner’s perspective.

Keynote Speakers:

James C. Greenwood
President and Chief Executive Officer of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO)

John P. Walker
