Track 4: Business Solutions

Sponsored by:
GE Healthcare Spacer

Biotech, pharmaceutical and medical device companies tend to focus on immediate growth factors, such as innovation and market share. As a result, they sometimes pay less attention to longer-term indicators of growth, such as productivity, supply chain performance and costs, capacity utilization. To improve operational performance, the companies need to manage assets more effectively. Business Solutions Track – new Gene Acres Track – will focus on industry case studies in order to allow companies to compare their current performance against peer measures as well as industry benchmarks.

Monogram Biosciences: Overcoming a Global Sample Collection Challenge
9:45am – 10:20am

While expanding into international markets, Monogram Biosciences was faced with a daunting challenge: offer a cost effective and easy to use global cold chain logistics solution for collecting companion diagnostic samples. Since Monogram's market for this product are all HIV treating physicians, Monogram sought a service provider who could provide total ease of use for this market, as the physicians, in general, are unwilling to become shipping experts or to source dry ice in order to order Monogram’s diagnostic sample. Furthermore, because trial sponsors (pharma partners) are largely price inelastic when it comes to logistics costs in a trial, Monogram had to find a low cost solution for the highly price elastic diagnostic market. Accessibility, visibility, turnaround time, maintaining sample integrity in transport and capability were key considerations as well. During this case study presentation Monogram and TNT will discuss challenges with which they were presented and how they were able to solve them through MedPak Ice Service.

Panel Speakers:

Glen McHenry
Manager, International Logistics, Monogram Biosciences, Inc.

Sara Field

SciClone Pharmaceuticals: Win-Win Contract Manufacturing
10:25am – 11:15am

Managing relationships with contract manufacturing organizations (CMO’s) can be challenging, and finding the right balance for both parties is key to achieving successful long-term results. While working with a CMO in Europe, SciClone Pharmaceuticals experienced a number of difficulties satisfying its manufacturing requirements for an API. In this presentation SciClone explores the root causes to these problems and the collaborative efforts used by SciClone and Lonza to resolve each issue. Overcoming these challenges required addressing not only manufacturing and production planning activities, but also dealing with differences in ideologies. The result of their combined efforts was a “win-win” for both sides: Lonza improved the manufacturing process, reduced cycle times and lowered their costs, while providing SciClone with material on time with significant cost savings.

Panel Speakers:

William Coakley
Sr. Director, Supply Chain Management, SciClone Pharmaceuticals

Jane O'Leary
