The Pro’s and Con’s of Modular Buildings
9:30am – 10:45am
Genentech is completing a modular building on their South San Francisco Campus; UCSF is considering using modular construction for all future stem cell research projects. This session is intended to discuss the advantages of this delivery system such as quicker delivery time, cost control, and single source, verses the disadvantages such as remote construction and possible community objections. We’ll explore the possibilities and the limitations of the available designs. We will also discuss the lessons learned about designing these projects and what regulating agencies will allow.

Getting the Lab You Want, version 2.0
11:00am – 12:15pm
This session is a follow up to last year and will highlight the session theme from different perspectives. Today’s program will include: Jennifer Pratt Mead, Director of Operations and Administration for Five Prime Therapeutics. She’ll provide a post-occupancy report on their facilities in the J. David Gladstone Institute, addressing move-in, what its like in Mission Bay, and if FivePrime got the labs they wanted. Mike Morehead, Genentech Senior Project Manager and James Park, Associate Principal with Perkins+Will will report on Genentech’s recent efforts in preparing a new campus in which facilities will be built by a developer with them as Tenant. They will discuss the effort required to get the labs that they want through negotiation with the developer, whose buildings were already entitled. Dan Hipple, Senior Director, Facilities Services with Theravance will present his approach to writing RFPs (Request for Proposals) so the potential of getting the lab you want is maximized, while risks are minimized. Geoffrey B. Sears, Partner at Wareham Development, will discuss EmeryStation East, a spec institutional-quality laboratory building presently under construction, and how the Wareham team as developer/owner/landlord works with large and small tenants (life, physical, and nano sciences) with a variety of distinct requirements.
