Rise and Fall of Incubation
10:00am – 11:15am
Communities around the world want to help innovators innovate. The BioScience Industry globally wants to support scientists in moving research from bench to bedside. By encouraging and supporting entrepreneurship within the field of science, the industry can accelerate the 'discovery and commercialization' of research to advance treatment for patients, in addition to creating jobs, sustainable growth and economic prosperity. However, incubators have risen to glory, fallen from grace, and are now on a comeback. What are the advantages? What are the issues? What are the best practices? How does the industry perceive them? How do we support them to address the ultimate need of accelerating the advancement of the industry

Getting the Lab You Want
11:30am – 12:45pm
A panel of industry experts will engage in a fast paced discussion of a wide variety of planning and design issues related to creating laboratory facilities. In the course of this session you will study the key design decisions that enabled a 200,000 sqf laboratory building in Emeryville to attract multiple biotech tenants with diverse research programs and space needs. You will learn about a creative decision-making process that helps clients effectively traverse through data collection and concepts investigation. In addition, you will gain a perspective on the requirements for a privately-held biotech company.
Among case studies presented during this session:
- The extraordinary concepts for flexibility incorporated in the 2004 Lab of the Year award-winning 245,000 sqf James H. Clark Center at Stanford are being implemented in a 2,000 sqf laboratory for biodiversity research in Tanzania.
- BSL-3 spaces are designed to highly exacting requirements, and built to precise specifications. See how the challenges of building a BSL-3 space in a former high school in Oakland for CHORI were successfully met.
-Examine the process FivePrime undertook in translating projected scientific requirements for an early stage drug discovery company into 30,000 sqf of warm shell space within an existing academic research facility in Mission Bay.

Retrospective Validation
2:00pm – 3:15pm
In today’s rapidly changing competitive business climate, there is a need for building generic facilities for flexibility to meet the needs of multiple products. A vital component in the licensing of these facilities is the validation of the facility including the utility and process systems. The challenge is to design and construct a flexible facility to meet the specific user requirements specifications (URS) to match the facility to the process and the rigid requirements for validation documentation. Retrospective Validation is a tool for meeting that challenge. In the panel discussion, the panelists will focus on what it means to perform retrospective validation, the successes and failures by citing case studies, highlighting the specific challenges faced and the methods used to meet the challenges.
