René Castro, PhD
Mr. Castro has been at Exelixis since 2004 and has over 15 years of experience in the life science industry. His focus is on sourcing, structuring and negotiating licensing, collaboration, M&A and financing transactions. Before joining Exelixis, Mr. Castro was an associate in the healthcare investment banking group at Goldman, Sachs & Co. While there, he worked on M&A, securities issuance, raid defense and other corporate finance and strategic activities in the healthcare industry, with a focus on pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Before joining Goldman Sachs in 2001, Mr. Castro was a post-doctoral fellow in synthetic organic and medicinal chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute. Mr. Castro earned a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Miami, an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, and a BM with honors in music performance with a minor in chemistry from the University of Miami. He has authored 15 publications in top scientific journals. In his free time, he can usually be found racing sailboats in San Francisco bay.
Christopher Dammann
Mr. Dammann has served as vice president, Business Development for Affymax since January 2006. From December 2004 to January 2006, he was an independent consultant, advising biotechnology clients on their partnering strategies. From August 2001 to August 2004, he served as executive director of Corporate Partnering at Clearview Projects, a business development consulting firm. From July 2000 to August 2001, Mr. Dammann was director of Corporate Development at ALZA Corporation, a pharmaceutical company. Mr. Dammann holds an MBA from Indiana University and a BS from the University of South Dakota.
Martin H. Goldstein
Martin H. Goldstein has served as Senior Vice President Corporate Development since August 2006. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Goldstein consulted for OncoMed beginning in October 2004 in the areas of corporate and business development and intellectual property. From 2001 to August 2006, Mr. Goldstein was a consultant to biotechnology companies in the areas of corporate and business development and intellectual property. Mr. Goldstein was a co-founder in 1995 of ViroLogic, Inc., a biotechnology company developing and marketing products to guide and improve the treatment of viral diseases. Mr. Goldstein served ViroLogic, Inc. through 2001 in various executive positions including President, Chief Executive Officer and director. From 1993 to 1995, Mr. Goldstein was a consultant to privately held biotechnology companies in the areas of business development and intellectual property. From 1991 to 1993, Mr. Goldstein was Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Epimmune, Inc., a biotechnology company. From 1989 to 1991, Mr. Goldstein was Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Xoma Corporation, a biotechnology company. From 1985 to 1989, Mr. Goldstein was Patent Counsel at Genentech, Inc., a pharmaceutical company. From 1983 to 1985, Mr. Goldstein was Patent Attorney at Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd., a pharmaceutical company. He received his MS in physiology from the University of Florida School of Medicine and his JD from Cardozo School of Law of Yeshiva University.
Kinney Horn
Mr. Horn is a Senior Manager in Business Development at Genentech, Inc. He is involved in licensing transactions for novel therapeutics, technologies and intellectual property. In addition, Mr. Horn works with early stage biotechnology companies that Genentech has invested in through its GenenFUND, Genentech’s private equity fund. Mr. Horn joined Genentech in 2003 in the R&D finance group. From 2003 to 2005, Mr. Horn held positions of increasing responsibility supporting 10 molecules in Genentech’s portfolio as a Financial Analyst, the B-cell franchise core team as a Senior Financial Analyst, and Genentech’s business development transactions as a Finance Manager. Prior to Genentech, Mr. Horn worked with early stage life science companies as part of venture capital investments and investment banking transactions at Emerging Technology Partners and Oscar Gruss & Son respectively. Mr. Horn holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and International Affairs from Mary Washington College and a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry from Georgetown University.
Yael Weiss, MD, PhD
Dr. Weiss completed her MSc and PhD in molecular genetics at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel and obtained her medical degree at Hadassah Medical Center, affiliated with The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. After practicing medicine for a few years, Dr. Weiss joined an Israeli venture capital firm as a vice president responsible for analyzing and maintaining deal flow, and then moved on to become a medical and business development director at Genzyme Israel. Dr. Weiss joined Merck's Israeli subsidiary as medical director in the beginning of 2004 and this summer joined Merck's Licensing group in San Francisco as a scientific scout responsible for identification of licensing opportunities emanating from the West Coast.
