Combination therapies are on the rise. Over the past four decades, multiple drugs with different mechanisms of action have been increasingly used in combination to effectively target a single disease. Combination therapies offer increased efficacy of the treatments while providing an easier therapeutic regimen for the patients. On the other hand, combination therapies lower administrative and reimbursement costs for the life sciences and insurance companies. And they proved to be an effective strategy for the pharmaceutical industry seeking to extend the life-cycle for blockbuster drugs. A panel of life science executives will discuss the rationale for combination therapeutics their companies offer, review some existing combination drugs, and explore the systematic approach taken by biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to identify combinations of therapeutic benefit.
