BayBio:IMPACT 2008 No Drugs for Super Bugs

Drug-resistant “super bugs” are responsible for 90,000 deaths and an additional $9.5 billion in health care costs. Out of 492 new drugs in the development pipeline, only seven treatments are currently being developed. New antibiotic approvals declined 56 percent over the last 20 years and at the same time 70 percent of hospital acquired-infections became resistant to at least one antibiotic.

Life sciences executives and scientists provide a perspective on innovation and the challenges of developing new antibiotics.

BayBio:IMPACT 2008 Disease Briefings are a series of legislative discussions on the state of the industry and the role legislators play in developing appropriate policy to encourage new innovations and technologies.
