David M. Clapper
Mr. Clapper currently serves as President and CEO of SurgRx, Inc., a medical device manufacturer. Prior to joining SurgRx in 2004, he served as President, CEO and a member of the Board of Directors of Novacept, a medical device company, from November 1999 until its acquisition by Cytyc Corporation in March 2004. From 1994 to 1999 Mr. Clapper was President and CEO and a Director of Focal, Inc. Before joining Focal, Mr. Clapper was employed at various divisions of Johnson & Johnson from 1977 until 1993. Mr. Clapper served as a member of the Boards of Directors of St. Francis Medical Technology (from June to December 2006), Conor Medsystems, (from 2004 to 2007) and Pulmonx (from 2003 to 2006). Mr. Clapper holds a bachelor's degree in Marketing from Bowling Green State University.
Jeffrey Gold
Jeff Gold is a Venture Partner of Longitude Capital. He focuses on investments in medical devices. Prior to Longitude, Mr. Gold was Chief Executive Officer of CryoVascular, a medical device company developing treatments for peripheral vascular disease, from 2001 to 2005. CryoVascular was acquired by Boston Scientific Corporation in 2005. Mr. Gold and Ms. Tammenoms Bakker worked together on the CryoVascular board of directors between 2000 and 2005. Between 1997 and 2000, Mr. Gold was COO and Executive Vice President of CardioThoracic Systems (NASDAQ: CTSI), a medical device company focused on developing products to enable off-pump open-heart surgery. CTSI completed an IPO in 1996 and was subsequently acquired by Guidant Corporation. Prior to CTSI, Mr. Gold spent 18 years with Cordis Corporation, now the primary cardiovascular subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. He currently sits on the boards of Access Closure, AngioDynamics (NASDAQ: ANGO), Voyage Medical, and Niagara Gorge Medical Devices. He also is a member of the Executive Committee of the Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the University of Florida. Mr. Gold holds an M.B.A. from the University of Florida and a B.S. in Engineering from Northeastern University, and is a graduate of GE’s Manufacturing Management Program.
Frank F. Rahmani
Mr. Rahmani is a partner in the Cooley Godward Kronish Business department and head of the firm's Medical Device Companies practice group. Resident in the Palo Alto office, he has been with the Firm since 1997. Mr. Rahmani has a general business and corporate law practice with an emphasis in the representation of emerging growth companies, intellectual property transactions, securities transactions, including private and public financing, and mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Rahmani has counseled companies, entrepreneurs and investors in a broad range of matters including start-up formation and spin-off transactions, assistance with obtaining early stage financing, technology acquisition and licensing matters, to later stage financings, strategic and commercial relationships, variety of public offerings and mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Rahmani counsels companies in a wide range of industries including medical devices and life sciences, software, semiconductor and telecommunication equipment. Mr. Rahmani received a J.D., from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1997, where he was on the Deans' List and was a representative to the American Bar Association. He received a business degree from Santa Clara University. Prior to joining Cooley, Mr. Rahmani was an analyst with Intel Corporation working with the corporate finance and worldwide sales organizations. Mr. Rahmani is a member of the State Bar of California.
Jay Watkins
Jay Watkins is a Managing Director at De Novo Ventures. Prior to joining De Novo in 2002, Mr. Watkins was a co-founder of Origin Medsystems, a venture-funded medical technology start-up that was purchased by Eli Lilly & Company in 1992. When Eli Lilly divested its medical device businesses to form Guidant in 1995, he became a member of the corporation’s management committee, serving in this role from 1995-2002. During this time, he served as president of numerous divisions, including the Minimally Invasive Surgery Group. In addition, Mr. Watkins was the President of Compass, Guidant Corporation’s corporate business development and new ventures group. Prior to founding Origin, Mr. Watkins held management positions in several start-ups, including Microgenics Corporation, and was a consultant with the international consulting firm of McKinsey & Company. He has been a member of the board of directors of several public companies, including Gynecare, Cardiogenesis, and Rita Medical. Mr. Watkins received his MBA from Harvard University and his undergraduate degree from Stanford University. Mr. Watkins sits on the boards of EBR Systems, PhotoThera, Pulmonx, Sierra Surgical, Synergeyes and Ventus Medical. He also represented De Novo on investments in Lumend and Hansen Medical.
