Mr. Welch has served as our Chief Executive Officer and President since September 2003. From 2002 to 2003, Mr. Welch was Chairman and CEO of Triangle Pharmaceuticals, a biopharmaceutical company. From 2000 to 2002, Mr. Welch was President of Biopharmaceuticals at Elan Corporation. During his tenure at Elan he was responsible for U.S. commercial operations, the international subsidiaries, the R&D function and the diagnostics businesses. From 1987 to 2000, Mr. Welch served in senior management roles at Sanofi-Synthelabo and its predecessor companies Sanofi and Sterling Winthrop, including Vice President of Worldwide Marketing. In addition, during his time at Sanofi, he led development and commercial collaborations with several major pharmaceutical companies. Prior to joining Sanofi-Synthelabo, Mr. Welch was with American Critical Care, a division of American Hospital Supply. He holds an M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina and a B.B.A. from the University of Miami.
