September 14: Identify & Mitigate Risks to Avoid Late-Stage Attrition Register to attend today!
Why do so many products fail so late in the development process? R&D costs are soaring, regulatory requirements are rising, and comparative effectiveness hurdles loom. Now more than ever, flawed product advancement decisions can take a huge toll on biopharmaceutical companies. The risk of failure should decrease dramatically as drugs advance from Phase I to Phase III trials, yet the evidence shows otherwise: high-profile, late-stage product failures remain a core feature of the industry’s news cycle. Deloitte Recap data show 30% of products fail in Phase III pivotal trials and 11% fail even later, after a licensure submission has been made. What can the data tell us about why this keeps happening and how to identify and mitigate the risks. Can’t attend live? Register to receive the recorded webinar and accompanying slides. Webinar. September 15: BioScience Forum Presents Gideon Bollag, Ph.D. Senior Vice President of Research Plexxikon
Kinase inhibitors are gaining prominence in the fight to treat a variety of human cancers, and different approaches targeting two kinase pathways will be discussed: RAF and FMS. The identification of RAF kinases (A-, B-, and C-RAF) as important effectors of the RAS oncogene subsequently led to drug discovery efforts to identify potent inhibitors of RAF kinase. One such discovery project led to the identification of sorafenib, a potent inhibitor of C-RAF kinase. Despite the successful development of sorafenib as a therapeutic option for patients with metastatic kidney and liver cancers, an understanding of the mechanistic role of C-RAF inhibition remains enigmatic even ten years since its initial discovery. Dr. Bollag has served as senior vice president of research at Plexxikon since June 2008, and has more than 20 years of biotechnology drug discovery experience. He previously served as vice president of discovery biology since 2004 and joined Plexxikon as senior director of drug discovery in 2002. In Milbrae. Detailed Information

September 21: Bio2Device Group | Isonostics™ - The Next Generation of Diagnostics
Target Discovery is developing the next generation of clinical diagnostics, offering higher value molecular insights for the diagnosis and management of disease. The company’s initial commercial focus is on the new class of protein isoform biomarker diagnostics (Isonostics™) that better guide therapeutic choices for cancer and lower the overall costs of cancer treatment. The company engages in funded collaborations with partners, for application of its unique isoform-level technologies in other disease areas and in theranostic applications (diagnostic testing to select or disqualify patients for a specific drug therapy). Isonostics refers to diagnostic tests based on protein isoforms. Traditional immunodiagnostic assays report the overall up- or down-regulation of a parent protein family, typically combining all isoforms of that protein into the result (causing loss of specificity and sensitivity). Molecular diagnostics (DNA/RNA level) offer insights into single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and splice variants, which account for only a small portion of all protein isoforms. Target Discovery's Isonostic assays do capture and quantify expressed mutations (SNPs) and splice variants, but ALSO quantify the much wider variety of post-translational modifications (PTMs) that are not currently differentiated by existing clinical diagnostic products but are typically the critical determinants of disease conditions and treatment optimization. And are investors driving change in behavior? A panel of seasoned investors – VCs, angels, and corporate investors – will reflect on investments made over the last two years and during the 2011 JP Morgan Healthcare Conference, highlighting what life science entrepreneurs should expect ahead.
