July 9, 2009: Ohlone College | Introduction to Bioinformatics
This one-day hands-on introductory workshop is targeted to industry employees, students, teachers and interested individuals wishing to gain an overview of the databases and tools widely used to address typical biotechnology problems. Participants will use literature and molecular databases and apply BLAST and ClustalW2 tools to conduct structure/function analyses, DNA/protein sequence alignments and evolutionary analyses. Resources from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) will be emphasized. July 9, 2009: Stanford Summer Science Lecture Series | The Secret Life of Viruses with Robert D. Siegel
Viruses exist in the hazy zone between the living and the nonliving. Though too small to see, they profoundly affect our lives from annoying colds to deadly Ebola. They spread invisibly from person to person and then attack humans from within. This talk will address the basic question of “What is a virus?” and look at the special properties that distinguish virus from more conventional life forms as well as those features which viruses and humans have in common. July 10, 2009: California Applied Biotechnology Center and Merced College | Biotechnology for the 21st Century: A Workshop for Nonscientists
This workshop is designed to introduce participants to the field of Biotechnology. Individuals representing government, local industry, education and people interested in science are invited to attend this 8-hour workshop, in which they will: Review basic biology and chemistry in lecture followed by a hands-on lab experience. In lab, participants will prepare a sample of their own DNA, run a PCR reaction and view the results using gel electrophoresis.
